State of the World Today

or...Living in a World They Didn't Make

Check this out:

50 Cent not only notches a fifth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 with "Candy Shop" featuring Olivia, but the rapper also becomes the first artist in 41 years to hold four slots on the top 10.

The last artist with four singles in the top 10 was the Beatles, who held the top five spots on the tally in 1964.

We know that some of our readers may not be huge Beatles fans. In fact, there are several littleboxes staff members who cannot even name 2 of the 4 men that were in the group. They were definitely a band, like all bands, that were important to some members of society and totally off the radar to others. But, one thing is for sure, they were really, really popular. Like unbelievably popular in terms of just the sheer number of people who purchased (and still purchase) their albums and saw their concerts.

The fact that 50 Cent is the first artist to have four singles in the Top 10 in 41 years is amazing, right? Well, maybe not. In my humble opinion, most artist don't even release 4 singles at a time. 50 Cent is a guest artist on 2 of these tracks anyway. But, damn, this guy is really popular. Will he release an album of hits 40 years from now and have it go to #1 on the charts? Hey, why not? But, we won't buy it. Even if we're alive. Get Rich, or Die Trying.

There's also a little voice inside of me that does not want to take a man whose name is "50" quite seriously. Is it wrong of me to take more seriously artists who use, not even their real names, but actual names? What if James Brown was called Dime Bag? Or Glenn Frey was called...good lord, Glenn Frey is so awful.
