A bit, a tiny bit, of a change in direction for them. Some great melodies here. If you liked them before, you should still like them, unless you think they went "pop" or something (which would only prove that you are an asshole of some sort or another).

Paul McCartney-Chaos and Creation
A few good songs. Much of the album is kinda ho-hum. Maybe I've just heard too much Paul McCartney is my life? It's not bad but it's not great. I always ask myself if I would like the same album if instead of being by some old dude it was buy some fresh 19 year old dude. I can never really answer that question. Apparently it is impossible to control for the "old dude effect" when listening to the tunes.

Rolling Stones-Bigger Bang
OK, I this a bit better than McCartney, but it suffers from the same "old dude effect." There are, however, a couple of awesome songs on here. Such as? Well "Let Me Down Slow" is right up there in the top 30% of Stones songs (which is saying something!) and "Rain Fell Down" is in the top 50% for sure.

Nada Surf-The Weight is a Gift
Another solid album here. Their previous effort "let go" kicked my sorry ass all around the block. How can a dylan fan resist the song "Blonde on Blonde." This group should get much more attention. The songs on the new album are very solid and full of nice melodies. I could see how some people might get a little bit turned off by some of the more "hopeful" lyrics, but some people need to lighten up!!

Damn, bunch of sensitive white guy music. Who knew?

Big Women Blocking the Sidewalk

I've got digital cable. Although I do recommend staying away from P.E. music on extremely hot summer days, I cannot deny that this greatest hits package would be a nice addition to a record collection lacking any Public Enemy.

iTunes also has a Muddy Waters collection called "Hoochie Coochie Man: The Complete Chess Masters, Vol. 2, 1952-1958." This one cooks with some serious Blues. If you like the Blues but are suffering from "I only own various artists blues cds"-itis, I recommend that you download this collection. The price is $24.99 but you get something like 51 songs. Just think, you can tell your friends, yeah, I dig the blues. And when they ask you what you like you can say you are a big Muddy Waters fan and you might even mention a few songs that they have not heard of. This answer impresses better than the "I like a lot of different stuff but I'm not sure what" answer that you might be offering if someone asked you this question today. Remember, as Nick Hornby once wrote, "It's not what you're like, it's what you like."

The real guilty pleasure, although it's not clear it should be, is the ELO (electric light orchestra) greatest hits collection just added to iTunes. Wow. If you want some pure pop sugar from the 70s this hits collection is for you. Jeff Lynne really knows how to construct pop gems with relatively high melodic content.

I can't believe I actually wrote "pop gems." This must be the kagillionth time someone has wrote "pop gems." Hey, writing is hard work and I gotta stick with the cliches or I'll burn out!

You'll become a better person just by listening to 3 or 4 of the 30 second samples on the ELO collection. Why not try out "Livin' Thing", "Mr. Blue Sky", and "Sweet Talkin' Woman." This stuff is just so frickin's awesome!!

So in summary, if you're a person that really doesn't like rap but wants to own a few albums to up what you consider your cool quotient, then consider purchasing the public enemy greatest hits. A purchase of one of their actual albums, however, might up your quotient even more. Yet again, being honest about your musical preferences and admitting that you pretty much can't stand listening to any rap music might make you a bit of a loser, but it makes you honest and that can be cool.

There's really no excuse beyond monetary ones to not buy the ELO collection. Even if you hate music like this, the cd itself can serve a variety of purposes that, although utterly amazing, cannot be named here.

Last, there's the muddy waters collection which can educate anyone on the history of popular music.

Meanwhile, in my ongoing effort to sell the website with sex, check out Beyonce's ass. I did a search for ass pictures of Jay-Z but, alas, there are none available. There aren't really many ass pictures of male rockstars. I do remember, however, that the ladies did find D'Angelo attractive back in the day. So, it's a double feature!!

White Stripes

I went out and purchased the latest White Stripes album the other day. It is a very good album. I had heard it was a bit of a change of direction for them and what I heard was correct. There are less manic guitar solos and more piano solos.

I was cooling off on the whole White Stripes thing until I heard Loretta Lynn's album (which is great!!). Jack White (songwriter and producer for the Stripes) produced Loretta's album and just did a really great job.

Anyway, my gift to you is this song (mp3 file) from the new White Stripes album called "Little Ghost." It is a song in the realm of some of the stuff on Loretta Lynn's album.

Enjoy.

Uncle Tupelo

Hey there.

For those interested in the history of Wilco or the past of Uncle Tupelo or the origins of Son Volt, check out this article on Jay Farrar in Reuters. Here's a bit about Uncle Tupelo and Wilco.

Farrar has been walking that tightrope since founding Uncle Tupelo in 1987, mixing punk rock sensibilities of the 1980s independent college rock scene and fused it with the folk traditions of the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers.

Pundits would later call the music "alt country" or "no depression," taken from the Carter Family song that was the title track of Uncle Tupelo's first album.

Uncle Tupelo imploded in 1994 amid tensions between Farrar and the band's other principal songwriter Jeff Tweedy, who went on to form Wilco.

"The most unfortunate thing about Uncle Tupelo is that we were a young band," Farrar said. "We weren't really calling the shots. I found it incredibly frustrating that people at the record company that we didn't even know were making decisions about what songs were going to be released as singles, when I thought those decisions should be coming from the us."

BAD GUY

Those tensions were detailed in a recent biography of Wilco by Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot, who paints a sometimes unflattering picture of Farrar as uncommunicative and unwilling to share the spotlight with Tweedy.

"The book is very myopic," Farrar said. "I occupy the adversarial category that a lot of other guys do in the book, whether it's other musicians or the record company. It's unfortunate there isn't an objective history of Uncle Tupelo."

Wilco has since gone on to make several critically acclaimed records, including the hit album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," which has outsold Son Volt's entire catalog and was the subject of the Sam Jones documentary "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart."

"It is weird when there's a large level of hype associated with someone I'd known in the past," Farrar said. "But I just concentrate on what I do. I don't look at thinks like they're a competition."

Meanwhile, I purchased the new Son Volt album last week on iTunes. The album is titled "Okemah And The Melody Of Riot." Being the whore to the opinion of the masses that I am, my favorite Son Volt album is their first one, "Trace." Yes, I also get sick of all the people out there claiming that their favorite album by any group is "their first album." Seriously, it is like a sickness. How can it be that the first album is always better. I refuse to believe it. This is why I have never purchased "Ten" by Pearl Jam. Sure, there are other good reasons not to own TEN
1. It sounds like Foghat
2. Rock Music sucks, I like R & B
3. Ed Vedder seems like a whiny bitch

Anyway, back to Son Volt. The album is pretty good. There's a song "Jet Pilot" that makes fun of George W. Bush in a mildly entertaining way. The song "6 String Belief" muses on the ability of rock n' roll to provide meaning in a meaningless world. Or rather, that is the meaning I have imposed upon the song. Farrar lyrics are a bit hard to decipher, but they usually sound really good and like they might actually mean something even if they don't appear to.

Anyway, if you are a Jay Farrar fan, there is really no reason not pick up this album. If own no Son Volt, don't buy the damn thing. Get "Trace" and see if you like it. Or better yet, purchase "Anodyne" by Uncle Tupelo.

Speaking of interpreting lyrics, Jakob Dylan had this to say to the Chicago Tribune the other day:

"When the band broke [in 1996] and people started taking notice of us, I never expected anybody to hear my songs," Dylan said before a stop last week in St. Louis. "It was important to me what I was saying, but it was on a very isolated level. When I started writing songs, I was cautious of people looking too far into them. And they certainly have. And they still do. And it's not worthwhile at all, to any songwriter, really. But to do it to me -- I admit I was protective of that when I began writing. I didn't want to give anybody what they thought might be something else."

That would put any writer in a trick bag. It's not good form to write under limitations. "It was very restrictive. I began proofreading. If I thought a line might be too scrutinized, I would lose it -- against my own better judgment. It's nonsense on my end and the listener's end. I'm proud of all the records, but I wrote those early records when I was younger. I hadn't written that many songs, and I hadn't settled into a style that I was comfortable with. I'm still not. Songwriting is supposed to always keep evolving."

I found that pretty interesting given the pressures of being Bob Dylan's son.

Walmart Strikes Again!!
They have changed the album cover of Willie Nelson new album.

--THE PANDA

And...Farm Aid is coming back to Chicago.

Steve Earle and Chevy

Does anyone else find it out that Steve Earle's song "The Revolution Starts Now" is in a commercial for Chevy trucks? Pretty good movie, but I'd seen it before.
Little known fact: Luke Skywalker (originally Luke Starkiller) was originally supposed to be a little person. WOW. Thank God George Lucas changed that character. Not that there is anything wrong with little people.

What's going on in music?

Well, R. Kelly has got this 5 part "Trapped In the Closet" song out. It is complete shit! He's so dirty.

The Ying Yang Twins have some career advice for Michael Jackson in a recent issue of Billboard:
"This is his best time to make an album right now, and it needs to be called 'KMA - Kiss My Ass.' I'm telling you, this is Michael Jackson's best time. Really, he needs to make a song like, 'I didn't touch those little boys/I might buy them a lot of toys/but I don't mess with little boys.' We'd reinvent Mike if we did a song with him. If Ying-Yang do a song with Mike, it's going to be a strip-club song. We'd have Mike over messing with the strippers. Mike has not had his toes curled. He needs a real black woman, that's what Mike needs."
- D-ROC of Ying-Yang Twins, whose X-rated "Wait (The Whisper Song)" is No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 this issue

Also, there is a movie about Townes Van Zandt:
Fans will savor this chronicle of the lanky troubadour, whose honeyed Texan baritone etched landscapes of ache and longing. For those unacquainted with a true songwriter's songwriter -- as the likes of Steve Earle, Joe Ely and Emmylou Harris attest -- Margaret Brown's artful film is a compelling introduction. After traveling the fest circuit, including a recent stop at the Los Angeles Film Festival last month, the documentary is set for fall release via Palm Pictures.

--THE PANDA

Oasis vs. Wilco

An easy battle? Well, yes, sorta.

I saw Oasis live recently. They were good, very solid musically. I also saw Wilco. They were better. However, I was substantially closer at the Wilco show, so that may have played a small part.

Also, Oasis just do not move around during their show. They are like rocks on stage. They will play an exciting guitar solo and barely move. While wilco will play a less exciting guitar slowly and jump around like apes on cocaine. The apes on cocaine effect actaully contributed positively to my enjoyment of the show. Odd.

I once saw the Rolling Stones in concert. The opening band that night was the Spin Doctors. (You know "Two Princes.") The lead singer was doing back flips and shit during the entire set. It detracted from my enjoyment of their show because it looked comical.

I saw Talib Kweli once as well. He just walked around and made some hand gestures. He did not embarass himself but all the excitement of the show came from his lyrical and rapping abilities as opposed to his showmanship.

Thus, I have absolutely no theory on the appropriate amount of moving around by an artist during a concert.

Spoon

Holy Shit. I was so fucking ignorant. I had not heard of Spoon until I read about them in that often piece of shit magazine called Rolling Stone.

Spoon are apparently a 3 piece outfit from Austin, TX. Their new album "Gimmie Fiction" is a very solid album. It is probably not a great album. It will not cause you to run down the streets half-naked, screaming to your neighbors that you've found the lord and you're finally going to stop dropping acid.

But more than a handful of these songs will make up turn up your stereo and sing along. It's that kind of singing along where you don't really know the words yet but you've got the melody so you kind of starting singing, messing it up along the way, but having a damn good time.

Spoon!

-The PANDA

We're Ready To Believe You

Album Review

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals-Cold Roses: This album is OK. I really enjoyed "let it ride" (the first single) with its easy flow and relaxed vocals. This is my favorite kind of alt-country and the vibe reminds me of the Wilco song "Summer teeth." There must be a few other goods song on here, but too many of them just wander around with half-assed lyrics. Often the lyrics feel too wordy and I kind of just want some lame rhyming couplets. Half-assed lyrics do better with rock music as opposed to the acoustic setting. Of course, some of these songs have more problems than just the lyrics. The music sometimes resembles something written and played on the spot with no discernable direction. I really like Ryan Adams. I want to like his stuff. But this should have been a single album instead of a double album. However, maybe there is a song on here for all Ryan Adam's fans, so then, the double album is appropriate.

Beck:Guero

This is a good album, but I don't find myself listening to it that often. Not really sure why. Beck does a few new things on this record instead of just recycling Odelay. There's just something about the album that doesn't grab me the way that Odelay did. Maybe it just doesn't sound cool. Yet I am so god damn far away from cool that it's probably all my fault.

It's weird how I can be extremely disappointmed in a band or a musician. Take Ryan Adams. I really liked Gold and Heartbreaker, he seemed on the verge of making a real gem of an album. However, I feel like he has been kinda underwhelming. But god damn, I love his cover of "Wonderwall."

Oasis: I think this band really delivered the goods on their first two albums. Some amazing (although derivate) rocks songs, with melodic hooks and often inspiring vocals and guitar playing. However, it seems that sometimes artists really have only two great albums in them. I still like Oasis but they haven't surprised me since 1995. They also deliver some awful lyrics. The lyrics on the first two albums weren't Dylanesque but they weren't often embarassing. Maybe artists get a bit lazy after success. You probably really work on the lyrics for the first batch of songs, but once those are successful you realize that you were able to get away with the horrible rhyme or lame verse and still sell a million copies. This must provide less incentive to spend hours or days getting the words just right in newer songs. But no one listens to Oasis for the lyrics anyway. You listen to hear Liam Gallegher's voice and maybe some well-constructed melodic pop songs.

Michael Jackson: Thriller and Off the Wall were so awesome. Bad just kinda sits there. Dangerous has a few interesting tracks on it with Jackson actually trying to expand his sonic landscape and especially his lyrical content. "Jam" is one of his best songs and is an amazingly insightful comment on life from a suppossed "non-reality based lifeform." However, ever since the first child molestation allegations Jackson has gone bye-bye. Not very much output. It's not that some of his newer songs aren't good, but they just don't seem to have the same vigor as earlier tracks. Maybe his career and life would have turned out better if Thriller hadn't been so successful.

--The PANDA

So Illegal

Lyla--Oasis

from Polish radio. More Evidence?

So, it turns out that the PANDA, that's me, knows quite a lot about Michael Jackson and the Michael Jackson trial. So, in a constant search for something to write about I have decided that it might help to write about something that I actually know something about. I'm not sure how the first entry of my little mini-blog of Michael Jackson case should start. I'm sure others have these MJ-case related blogs already fired up and in prime running mode.

The folks over at the parent company (littleboxes) were a bit worried about more of a focus on Jackson scaring readers away. However, after I assured them that I have absolutey no readers, they agreed that this could do no harm.
------------------------------
The big news today is that Judge Melville has decided to allow some (but apparently not all) past molestation allegations concerning Mr. Jackson into the trial. Why some and not all? I am totally not sure as it has yet to be explained.

Why and what does this mean?
Prosecutors want to show that Mike is a bad man who has done this before. They want to show that past allegations are similar to the current allegation. They want to do this because their current accuser is just horrible (in a witness sense, not necessarily as a person). This helps their case.

Of course, they aren't actually going to have alleged victims coming in and testifying. That would just be too damn simple for this case. They are going to have third parties come in and testify as to what they have seen. One third party alleges to have seen MJ molest McCauley Culkin. Of course, Culkin denies that anything inappropriate every happened. Most of the "third party" is a group of former employees that sued Jackson for firing them because they knew about him being a pedophile. Get this, after they sued him, they lost the case and had to pay Mr. Jackson's legal fees. Ouch! So here they are again. You think they have any motivation to get Mr. Jackson again? If he is found guilty they could end up with some money. Of course, they could just be benevolent souls who stood idly by while children were being molested and then only reported something after they lost their jobs.

This was a horrible first post. I apologize. But, whatever. No one is reading anyway. It will get better. When I get more time we'll lay out the current case and talk about what's so damn weird about it.

Conclusion: This past evidence stuff really sucks for Michael Jackson. No he has to defend himself from several allegations at the same time. And not even allegations from actual alleged victims but allegations from people who claim to have seen something. Crazy. well, I guess they are called witnesses. But it sure would be nice to have an actual alleged victim testify. Supposedly we'll only get one alleged victim to testify for 5 total alleged molestations. And no, Jordan Chandler, of the 1993 most famous case, will not testify.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://littleboxesmusic.blogspot.com/2005/03/more-kids-more-evidence.html' title='More Kids. Here's the article link.

Here's a few of the bands that I checked out on i-Tunes thought were at least OK.

Kings of Convenience: Some songs reminded me too much of Simon and Garfunkel. For some people this is a good thing. However for me, it is definitely not a good thing. But some of the stuff sounded pretty good and not like S&F.

Los Super Seven: This stuff sounded great. If only I spoke Spanish. The article says Joe Ely is in the group, but he is not listed as a contributor on i-Tunes. I love Joe Ely. Anyway, this group is a so-called latin music diaspora album. They have tex-mex sounds, cuban sounds, peruvian sounds, country sounds, and more. Good stuff.

Full Disclosure: Did I buy any of this? No, but if I had more money I just might. Although the S&F flashback almost killed me with the Kings of Convenience.

State of the World Today

or...Living in a World They Didn't Make

Check this out:

50 Cent not only notches a fifth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 with "Candy Shop" featuring Olivia, but the rapper also becomes the first artist in 41 years to hold four slots on the top 10.

The last artist with four singles in the top 10 was the Beatles, who held the top five spots on the tally in 1964.

We know that some of our readers may not be huge Beatles fans. In fact, there are several littleboxes staff members who cannot even name 2 of the 4 men that were in the group. They were definitely a band, like all bands, that were important to some members of society and totally off the radar to others. But, one thing is for sure, they were really, really popular. Like unbelievably popular in terms of just the sheer number of people who purchased (and still purchase) their albums and saw their concerts.

The fact that 50 Cent is the first artist to have four singles in the Top 10 in 41 years is amazing, right? Well, maybe not. In my humble opinion, most artist don't even release 4 singles at a time. 50 Cent is a guest artist on 2 of these tracks anyway. But, damn, this guy is really popular. Will he release an album of hits 40 years from now and have it go to #1 on the charts? Hey, why not? But, we won't buy it. Even if we're alive. Get Rich, or Die Trying.

There's also a little voice inside of me that does not want to take a man whose name is "50" quite seriously. Is it wrong of me to take more seriously artists who use, not even their real names, but actual names? What if James Brown was called Dime Bag? Or Glenn Frey was called...good lord, Glenn Frey is so awful.
--The PANDA

Panda's albums of the year

OK, the year in review. Bob Dylan--Live 1964 (A young Zimmy talking and singing in NYC)
3. Talib Kweli--The Beautiful Struggle (A few of his best songs, a few of his weakest)
4. Mos Def--The New Danger ("I love `the Panties'")
5. The Killers--Hot Fuss (some say new Morrisey. I don't agree. But good voice, OK lyrics, one out of two ain't bad)
6. Brian Wilson--Smile
7. Mary Lee's Corvette--700 Miles (this might have been last year, but it was good)
8. Johnny Cash--Unearthed
9. It even manages to allude to other songs on the album and use the word "twerk" way before it became ubiquitous on BET and MTV in recent history. "Freak of the Week" is another classic song and other tracks are definitely up to standard. However, Knee Deep is such a powerful song that it overshadows all the other tracks. It features much sampled synth bass line that is abosolutely to die for! Yes folks, this bass line kills people. "Something about the music, it got into my pants" is repeated as one of the many mini-choruses in this song.
This album is recommended as a must have for all Funkadelic fans and even a nice album to have for those looking for a first Funkadelic album. Andreas finishes his concerts drenched in sweat as though the emotions and music had to be wrung out of him. On this record Pape proves that he can transfer the passion of his live performances to the CD format. Standout tracks "Green Valleys of TN" and "4 Years Too Long" remain powerful and clever testaments of this songwriters intense feelings regarding politics, war, and love. The production here is spare but tracks such as "Poinsetta" are enhanced by editing and vocal effects.

This is Pape's first album and many of the songs sound similiar in tempo and rhythm. Some of this is surely the artist's intention as this album is really just his voice, his harmonica and his acoustic guitar. However, it would serve Pape well to make a significant effort to alter his sound on his next release. If the new songs he played live at his most recent show are any indication, Pape's sound will continue to expand, his lyrics will become less literal, and the passion inherent in all his songs will remain.

--The PANDA

Click here for an exclusive audio clip of Andreas performing "I know there's an answer" by the Beach Boys.

Guess Who's Back

Alright, the folks over at littleboxes have hired me (yes, me!) to write their "Album of the Week."
